Moon Rocks Land at Gayton CofE Primary Academy

March 11, 2025

At Gayton CofE Primary Academy, they contacted the Science and Technology Facilities Council regarding their program ‘Borrow The Moon’.

Between 1969 and 1972 six manned Apollo missions landed on the Moon and collected samples to bring back to Earth for study.  Some of these samples were preserved in acrylic discs for use by NASA. These samples were loaned to us via the Science and Technology Facilities Council along with a range of other meteorites and interesting rocks the children were able to handle and examine.

The children at Gayton CofE Primary Academy had a ‘Moon’ week and all classes from EYFS to Year 6 took part in at least 2 lessons to learn all about the samples, the Moon and Space. These lessons covered science, geography, mathematics, literacy and drama. The children had a wonderful time making ‘edible meteorites’, ‘comparing earth rocks and space rocks’, ‘planning a mission and landing on the moon’ and ‘hitting the moon with meteorites’ to name but a few.

Their Governor Mr Bennet who is a Geologist also joined them for some of the lessons to share his knowledge and wisdom.  It was an amazing opportunity and all of the children learnt so much.
